ABOUT Claude's tale

The story
The book follows Claude’s journey, a wild Cornish lobster, who starts life as an egg on the underside of his mum’s tail with his 4,000 brothers and sisters.  The mother lobster gets caught in a lobster pot and brought to the National Lobster Hatchery where her young can hatch away from predation and the baby lobsters are nurtured through their most vulnerable stage of their life cycle and released back into the wild.  The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and bring the story to life.

Why we wrote the book

As part of the National Lobster Hatchery charity educational activities it was decided the hatchery needed an education resource for our younger visitors to explain what the National Lobster Hatchery does and the importance of sustainable fisheries.  We decided to publish our own children’s book and the profits could feed back into our lobster stock enhancement programme.

In 2011 we finally had the finished product and it has proved to be a fantastic educational resource that we hope will engage the next generation to be passionate about the future of our oceans.

funded by SEA-CHANGERS
Sea-Changers is proud to support the National Lobster Hatchery by sponsoring 'Claude gets his claws'.  The work carried out by the National Lobster Hatchery fits perfectly with our vision to create healthier seas by working with and involving local coastal communities and businesses. By purchasing a copy of this book you are supporting their work and helping to restock fisheries, protect the marine bio-diversity of our oceans, support coastal communities and be part of creating the change in industry and consumer choice to source and buy sustainably caught fish. In other words … you are creating a positive sea-change.

AUTHOR
There's nothing better than watching my two boys' eyes light up when I pull up our lobster pot onto the fishing boat and see what the ocean has brought us today.  It's never the same twice.  They are both fanatical about rock pooling and anything that lives and breathes.

In our lifetime, those that have been intimate with the ocean have seen a huge change in flora and fauna.  Wouldn't it be nice if there was a healthy and diverse fishery for our children when they grow up?  It's a world worth looking after and exploring.

Painting drawing and illustration is such an important part of my life and my ideas are constantly stimulated and fed by the beautiful environment I live in.  The North coast of Cornwall is exceptional with it's dramatic coastline which is a perfect home for lobsters.  I love the way these incredible crustaceans reflect this in their colouring and patterning.  Each one is different and seem to have a character of their own, which is why I try to capture.
